I do enjoy using humour via dialogue in some of my sex
scenes, although I was told long ago that humour just isn't sexy in erotica and
I do understand this, but for me, the sex has to be fun and in real life you
often find yourself in bizarre and surreal situations, so I like to use this.
I've just realised I haven’t used the word romance anywhere so
far. I suppose I rarely intentionally
make the sex romantic, although this is more likely to be present during a kiss
or a gentle touch, or in my BDSM stories. However, quite a few of the stories are actually quite romantic and I only realise this when I read them back afterwards.
Interestingly, after I wrote this I found a piece by writer
and editor Maxim Jakubowski in which he talks about his method for writing sex
scenes.

He also adopts the deep visualisation technique and draws on personal experiences to infuse the scene with authenticity and heart. Maybe this is how all writers do it? I can’t imagine any other method.

That all rings a huge bell for me. I have to imagine myself there and I am always so tempted to insert a little humour, too! I think as long as the humour is placed where it doesn't disturb the flow of the erotic moment(s) it is a good reminder that the characters are human! It doesn't fit every story, of course!
ReplyDeleteHi Linda - thanks for stopping by. I tend to play a film in my head when I write sex scenes (and use this technique a lot in all my writing). I have written more "serious" erotic tales but I do enjoy writing the humorous ones more!
DeleteI so agree with your method. I do the same. It's like watching a movie scene play out and I just happen to be narrating it. If it doesn't move me, excite me and feel real...I know it won't for the reader! Thanks for the validation that I'm not alone in this!

Hi Victoria - lovely to meet you! Yes - if I can't see it and feel it, then it doesn't seem real.
DeleteI think I do have a lot to learn from you.
